Interested in becoming a process server in New York City?
While New York State has no statewide licensing requirements for process servers, New York City does have regulations and requirements. In order to become a process server in the five boroughs, here’s what you’ll need to do:
- Complete a basic individual license application. As part of this process, you’ll need to complete a background check, provide a passport-size photo and pay a licensing fee.
- Pass an exam to demonstrate your knowledge of the rules and regulations covering service of process. The NYC Department of Consumer Affairs publishes educational materials for process servers that can help you study for the exam.
- Execute a $10,000 surety bond. You can purchase this from a licensed insurance broker for about $200 to $300.
Once you’re licensed, you’ll need to:
- Keep electronic records of each serve. Electronic records must feature a time stamp that includes a GPS location. It’s a good idea to download one of several iPhone and Android apps that make it easier to stay on top of your record-keeping.
- Maintain a contemporaneous logbook
